Abstract:Titanium is a strategic mineral resource in China, and rutile is a high-quality raw material for titanium. Jiangsu Province ranks second in China for rutile reserves and is an important area for titanium resource exploration. However, the previous understanding of the mineralization era and the mechanisms of mineral formation is unclear. This study selected two eclogite samples from the middle-north section of the Maobei mining area in Donghai County, as well as nearby eclogite bodies from Nanliu, Pengzhai, and Qinglongshan, to conduct LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating and trace element analysis of the rutile contained within. The weighted average ages of rutile in the two eclogite samples from the Maobei mining area are (202.5±3.6)Ma and (200.8±1.5)Ma, respectively. For the rutile from the Nanliu, Pengzhai, and Qinglongshan eclogites, the weighted average ages are (201.8±1.4)Ma, (201.9±1.8)Ma and (197.7±4.1)Ma. In conjunction with the regional tectonic evolution history, these ages can represent the retrograde metamorphic stage after the metamorphic peak, representing the tectonic folding after the Triassic ultra-high-pressure metamorphic peak. The trace elements of rutile in the five eclogite samples show similar characteristics, with significantly higher high field strength element contents than the primitive mantle, indicating that ultra-high-pressure metamorphism is a key link in titanium enrichment. Using the Zr thermometer, temperatures below the ultra-high-pressure metamorphic peak (634~708℃) were obtained, further confirming that rutile formed under temperature conditions after the retrograde metamorphic action. The nearby Nanliu, Pengzhai, and Qinglongshan eclogite bodies have similar characteristics in rutile age and trace elements to those in the middle-north section of the Maobei mining area, suggesting a significant potential for mineralization. It is recommended to strengthen the comprehensive utilization of multiple ores in the process of exploration and mining.
